The American Blue Rabbit originated in California, developed and introduced by Lewis H. Salisbury in 1917. Mr salisbury used at least 3 different breeds of rabbits in the development. The American White variety was then introduced in 1925.
Since the development of compact commercial type rabbits, the American has lost it's position as a leader. It is now listed as critical for potential extinction by The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. Already one of the founding breeds is extinct, another is gone from the U.S., and rare in Europe.
